Gurdjieff’s teachings & the missing middle step

In this podcast we share with you a dialogue between Russell and one of his students, regarding the how’s: how the forces in an event work, how the diagram of nutrition takes place in the fourth stopinder, how the Man-Angel major oscillation transcends life, how Gurdjieff’s way was the missing middle step, how making life is like winning the lottery, how proteins are made, how DNA duplicates, and how atoms seek to become stable molecules.

The Ray of Creation Diagram

The Ray of Creation

Welcome to a series of talks about objective consciousness, an objective Universe, and an objective way to awaken, expanding upon the works of George I. Gurdjieff and Russell A. Smith.

In today’s podcast I will share with you a dialogue between Russell and one of his students, regarding the how’s: how the forces in an event work, how the diagram of nutrition takes place in the fourth stopinder, how the Man-Angel major oscillation transcends life, how Gurdjieff’s way was the missing middle step, how making life is like winning the lottery, how proteins are made, how DNA duplicates, and how atoms seek to become stable molecules.

Let’s begin:

Student:  Why are three forces needed to complete an event?

Russell:  Because if only one force was present, nothing would happen.

Student:  So, is success guaranteed if all three forces are present?

Russell:  Well, yes, and no. For instance: If I combine the right proportions of flour and water into dough, put the dough in an oven that is at the right temperature, and leave it in there for a specified period of time, I will get bread. However, if the proportions of flour and water are wrong, if the oven is not at the right temperature, or if I do not leave it in there for the specified period of time, I will not get bread.

Student:  Oh, I get it. Even though you have three forces, if those forces do not interact in the right way, you will not get the desired results.

Russell:  That’s correct.

Student:  Like being-Tritoehary, which, if you don’t take in air, food will not go further.

Russell:  That’s also correct.

Student:  It suddenly occurs to me how that is the explanation of everything.

Russell:  Yep. Just like the acorns on an oak tree. Most of the acorns which fall from an oak tree will not become oak trees.

Student:  Indeed.

Russell:  However, a few of them will; a few of them will get buried and will receive the right amount of water and sunlight, and as such, they will make it to the note TI, after which they will start producing their own acorns.

Student:  That is so true.

I want to ask you a question on another topic. Gurdjieff described the diagram of nutrition in his book Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson, which you also put in your book on pages 275 through 280. When I read the last paragraph on page 276, which ended at the top of page 277, I noticed something I had never noticed before: “When these evolving active elements, in their returning ascent from the last Stopinder of the fundamental common-cosmic Sacred Heptaparaparshinokh, enter into the common presences of being-apparatuses as their first being-food, they begin already from the mouth itself--with the help of the processes of the second-grade law Harnelmiatznel, that is, owing to mixture and fusion according to the ‘affinity of vibrations,’ with the active elements which have already evolved in the presences of the beings and have acquired vibrations corresponding to the subsequent Stopinders of the being-Heptaparaparshinokh--to be gradually changed, and are transmuted this time in the stomach of the beings into definite active elements named ‘being-Protoëhary,’ which correspond in their vibrations to the ascending fourth Stopinder of the fundamental common-cosmic Heptaparaparshinokh.”

Why does he say that ‘being-Protoëhary’ corresponds to the ascending fourth stopinder? What fourth stopinder?

Russell:  Great question. What you have discovered is quite significant. The food octave takes place between the notes FA and SO of a larger octave. That is, the bottom Do of the food octave starts at the FA of that larger octave and its top Do ends at its SO.

Student:  In what larger octave?

Russell:  In 5s octave (See the Ray of Creation Diagram)

But now, go one step further, and read the paragraph at the bottom of page 279: “And so, my boy, this totality of their first being-food which results from the evolution in these beings-apparatuses, corresponds with its vibrations to the last Stopinder of the being-Heptaparaparshinokh, and according to the particularity of this Stopinder, it enters the ‘higher-intentionally-actualizing-Mdnel-In’ of the law of Heptaparaparshinokh; and in order to transform completedly into new higher substances and in order to acquire vibrations corresponding to the vibrations of the next higher vivifyingness, namely, corresponding to the fifth Stopinder of the fundamental process of the common-cosmic Sacred Heptaparaparshinokh….” It needs ….‘being-Partkdolg-duty.’

So the food octave takes place in the fourth stopinder of the 5s octave, and thereafter, those who complete it, with ‘conscious labors’ and ‘intentional suffering,’ may enter into the fifth stopinder.

Student:  That was the other thing I found perplexing.

Russell:  I found it to be perplexing too. That is, until I formulated the Ray of Creation Diagram that revealed that the octave of ORGANIC LIFE takes place between the notes MI and SO of the 5s octave. Wherein, between its notes FA and DO, which law-conformably correspond to the notes FA and SO of the 5s octave, is where the food octave occurs, as well as, where the octave of man exists, and as such, man has both food to nourish his physical body, air to nourish his kesdjan body, and impressions to nourish his higher being-body. And if he is fortunate enough to understand the laws of world-creation and world maintenance, he just might be able to unite his lower centers into one and awaken his Steward and his Master. And thereafter, enter the fifth stopinder.

Student:  Wow, Russ, I see it. It makes perfect sense.

Russell:  Furthermore, as discussed in chapter 4, the FA-SO interval is the lower half of a major oscillation that goes from FA to SO to LA. Which caused me to ask, “What major oscillation would have its lower half culminating at man and its higher half go beyond?” To which I got an answer, which was, “The Man-Angel major oscillation.”

Student:  Amazing Russ, I can see that too. That oscillation takes the physical world into the spiritual world.

Russell:  Yes, it does.

That being said, I think congratulations are in order, as you have questioned two things that most folks will never question.

Student:  Cool.

Russell:  Which, when I think about it, is quite remarkable, because no one has ever questioned me, except for you, as to why the food diagram takes place in the fourth Stopinder; and, after completion, allows man to enter the fifth stopinder. So again, congratulations!

Student:  Wow. Really?

Russell:  Yep, you are the only one.

Student:  Very cool!

Russell:  Okay. Next study pages 115 and 116 in The Blueprint of Consciousness, and the idea that Our Endlessness had to lengthen the Stopinder between its third and fourth deflections and see what other treasures you can find.

Student:  I will.

Russell:  But be careful; if you do not consider the fact that Our Endlessness ‘lengthened the law-conformable successiveness’ of that stopinder, you might try to stretch those notes apart, and as such, will lose your way.

Student:  I will, and I won’t; I promise. I will read it until I understand it.

Thank you for that.

Russell:  You are most welcome.

Are you still feeling the presence of your Steward?

Student:  Oh, yes. I haven’t made any decisions without him!

Russell:  That’s terrific. Later, we will add your Master.

Student:  I am very much looking forward to that as well. For me, it was a revelation to learn that everything I needed was inside of me.

Russell:  Indeed.

Amazingly, when Christ told us that the Kingdom of Heaven was not lo here or lo there, but was inside us, he was flat out telling us that He was our Steward, and that God was our Master. All we had to do was find a way to allow our machine to work law-conformably, and if we did, we would be able to contact them.

Okay, have you gone over your memorization in Views?

Student:  I did go over it; but I need to go over it again, as it was beginning to slip away.

Russell:  Yikes, don’t let that happen.

Student:  No, no, I won’t. It’s pretty solid actually, but while I was on vacation, I got a little bit lazy. I am also solid on Aphorisms 1 thru 10, as well as some in the 30’s, which I found very interesting, as they dealt with hope, faith, and love: #36, Hope, when bold, is strength. Hope, with doubt, is cowardice. Hope, with fear, is weakness. #35, Conscious faith is freedom. Emotional faith is slavery. Mechanical faith is foolishness. And #34, Conscious love evokes the same in response. Emotional love evokes the opposite. Physical love depends on type and polarity. However, I am not quite sure as to what that means. Does that mean like body types?

Russell:  Oh, no, let’s not give any credence to body types. Just take it that the word ‘type’ means those of common interest, like how medical professionals, sport enthusiasts, or those who frequently tip the bottle, will often get together. And the word polarity, is simply the idea that opposites attract, like how good girls are sometimes attracted to bad boys, and vice versa.

Student:  I got it. That makes perfect sense. People, who are in the same profession, or who are interested in the same thing, often like to wrestle in the hay. As well as the fact that plus attracts minus, and minus attracts plus.

Russell:  Yep, you got it.

Student:  I have also been doing The Objective Exercise.

Russell:  Great. How did that go?

Student:  It went very well.

By the way, I was listening to an audio tape by some speaker about higher states of consciousness, much of which I experienced after being in contact with you. He was talking in a very long-drawn-out way about how when the mind got quiet, we would have clarity, but he didn't say how to do that.

Russell:  That is law-conformable. People often tell us what the aim is but are unable to tell us how to attain it.

Student:  Indeed.

Russell:  Before I found Gurdjieff, I too saw how other various esoteric teachings said more or less the same thing, which was, “You need to be a Christian,” but they did not tell me how to do that. Which means that they either forgot the middle step, or downright didn’t know it. That is why Gurdjieff’s work impressed me so much. His work focused on the missing middle step; the step of ‘how to be able to be a Christian.’ Thus, the idea of the work being practical entered the picture.

Student:  That is exactly right.

I also noticed, when I came back from vacation, how my old habits wanted to make me a slave, but I didn’t let them.

Russell:  That is wonderful.

Student:  So, what else has been happening?

Russell:  Well, other than a new student coming in on Saturday, I got a letter from a fellow in England that said: “I bought your book because it looked curious. However, after giving it a quick skim, I at first thought that it was flaky, but then, when I went back and gave it a good read, I found it to be incredible! Your postulations are amazing. I must say, your book is the most impressive work I ever came across! As such, I want to know more about you, who you are, what you are doing, and whether or not you hold seminars. The reason I ask is because I am looking for a teacher. I was in Bennett’s group, but when I asked questions about things that seemed wrong, the people there didn’t want to address them. But, after reading your book, I don’t think I will get the same from you”

Well, that’s it. I will respond to him shortly.

Student:  You won’t have any problem responding to him?

Russell:  Oh, no, not at all. It sounds like he has been making efforts to see the structure, and that I will be able to show him. Besides, I will have no problem responding to a person who at first glance thought my book was flaky, and then when they read it, they thought it was incredible.

Student:  I have been thinking about your book in the context of how, when they found those Mars fragments in the ice in Antarctica, they postulated that it might be possible that life was imported from other galaxies or from other planets.

Russell:  Well, in a sense that is true, because what is the Earth? The Earth is nothing other than the gathering together of materials created in supernovas. Materials which accumulated on the surface of a planet that had water in liquid form, which allowed those materials to mix, and ultimately to create life. Those conditions probably existed on Mars at one time as well, but Mars wasn’t large enough to hold its atmosphere, and as such, it lost its water.

Student:  That makes sense.

So probably, many planets out there have life.

Russell:  Yes sir, they do. It is not that hard to chain amino acids into proteins, and wherever there are proteins, there is life.

Student:  Do you think it is Divine intervention?

Russell:  No, sir. It is strictly law-conformable.

And with the advent of DNA, when things started to copy themselves, life evolved. Then, throw in billions of years of mutation, and the next thing you know is, you go from making protein chains to making men.

Student:  I heard that, because of the odds, in order to make amino acid chains that were conducive to life, it would have taken the Universe much more time than was available.

Russell:  Well, maybe that is so. But fortunately, it has to do with odds. Which means that it is akin to winning the lottery.

Student:  That’s true.

Russell:  Remember, we are looking at a very big timeframe. And, as we are only here for 80 years, it is hard for us to fathom what took place in the 14 billion years which preceded us.

Student:  I think they threw the model into a computer, and the computer spat out such a large number that they believed life was not feasible.

Russell:  Again, that may be true; but nonetheless, we are here.

Like I said, it is just like winning the lottery. The Earth could have gotten the right number on the first try.

Student:  That too is true.

Russell:  Indeed, it is. Even if there were an infinite number of possibilities, the right ones could happen any time during the process. However, maybe the computer model is right, and most planets will never have life. But, since creating life is like winning the lottery, it might happen tomorrow on every planet. Fortunately, for our planet, the right combinations quickly came about. Got the idea?

Student:  Oh, yes. It is a very compelling idea.

Russell:  So, with billions and billions of planets out there, some of them are bound to win the lottery.

Student:  And, when they do, they are going to have the building blocks of life.

Russell:  Correct. And then, when they discover a way of copying themselves, life will accelerate.

Student:  The idea of DNA copying itself is something that I do not quite understand.

Russell:  No problem.

I will give you the condensed version:

It started with amino acids.

Amino acids are organic compounds mainly composed of nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

Our bodies need 20 different amino acids to grow and function properly.

Those 20 amino acids link-up in long chains; some of which create viable proteins.

Student:  Ooh, those need to be remembered.

Russell:  Indeed they do. Thus, the Transfer RNA molecule (tRNA) enters, which I introduced in Chapter 4.

The tRNA molecules have the ability to recognize the amino acids in those chains, and as such, they are able to convert the order of their linkage into strands of Messenger RNA (mRNA) which code for that order.

The process goes both ways. That is, with the help of the tRNA molecules, the amino acid chains can make mRNA, and the mRNA can make amino acid chains.

In addition, the mRNA goes one step further. In order that they can be replicated, each strand constructs a single rail of DNA, which in turn constructs a second rail of DNA and then coils with it to become the familiar double helix DNA molecule. The second rail knows how to make the first, and the first rail knows how to make the second, as well as how to make the mRNA.

Here is how it works.

RNA and DNA are both polymers made of long chains of nucleotides. Nucleotides are sugar molecules (either ribose in RNA or deoxyribose in DNA) that are attached to a phosphate group and a nitrogen-containing base. The bases used in DNA are adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine. The bases used in RNA are the same as in DNA except for one; RNA uses uracil instead of thymine.

When the double helix DNA molecule unzips into separate rails, each rail is able to construct the other from free floating nucleotides, which is accomplished because the nucleotides in one rail are complementary to the nucleotides in the other.

The complementary nucleotides are (adenine and thymine) and (cytosine and guanine). That is, adenine only bonds with thymine, and cytosine only bonds with guanine. Those strict bonding arrangements ensure that each rail constructs the proper rail and preserves the purity of the original DNA molecule.

In addition, as I said, by substituting uracil for thymine, one rail can remake the mRNA strand from which it came.

Student:  Wow! It is almost as if those molecules have will.

Russell:  They do have will. They have the mathematical will of the structure.

Student:  So, life is not totally random after all?

Russell:  No, it is not. Instead, it is law-conformable. It is like saying, “Here is a puzzle piece that has a bump, and here is a puzzle piece that has a dent, and as such, those two puzzle pieces will naturally join.”

Student:  Alright. But what caused them to want to join?

Russell:  Well, if we postulate that before creation the three forces were all in the same place; and, after creation, they were not. It is not a stretch for us to presume that the separated forces have an affinity to once again be in the same place. Unfortunately, after they were separated, they were unable to do so. But fortunately, the structure had to also be altered, in order to bring it into alignment with the separated forces, the results of which were that the forces that were separated were able to act as if they were in the same place, as they could all be in the same octave.

Which is kind of similar to what atoms do. Atoms obey the octet rule. The octet rule refers to the tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in their outermost shell, their valence shell. And as such, atoms with fewer than eight electrons will seek to attain 8 by sharing their electrons with other atoms who also wish to attain 8 electrons. When they do, those atoms will not only become stable, but will also create new compounds. For instance, take water. Water comes into existence when two Hydrogen atoms share their electrons with one Oxygen atom. So it is very good when an Oxygen atom says, “I have room for two more electrons,” and two Hydrogen atoms say, “Well, we both have one extra electron, so how about we get together and dance?”

Student:  Ah, that is why water is so stable.

Russell:  Yes, it is. And once a compound is stable it wants to stay stable. That is, once a molecule like salt is created, it is very hard to turn it back into Sodium and Chlorine, because salt is in a much more stable state than Sodium or Chlorine.

Student:  Well, Russ. Presently, my valence shell is quite full, and as such, I too am very stable. That being said, it is probably a good time to end this call.

So, good night, and thank you very much.

Russell:  You are most welcome. Good night, sir; I’ll see you next week.
