KeymasterExplanation of the Diagram, "LA to TI Octaves"
Class lecture: 3-5-05
What is Steward?
The Higher Emotional Center is Steward.
Continuing what we have been discussing about octaves making a force that gets up to La.
One day I was sitting around thinking…. Well, alright, if something has a force from the bottom that takes a thing to LA… and, if something has the TI-DO interval, where the DO reaches back and helps TI complete itself… then, what’s taking place between LA and TI?
The model, given by Ouspensky is, nature brings man up to a certain point and leaves him to develop on his own. Which means that something else takes place between LA and TI.
In the court system the trial continues until it reaches a place where everybody says, “We’re done. We’re through with it. We’re out of it. There are no more accusations. There are no more arguments for, and there no more arguments against. Thus, the trial has reached LA. So, how does it get to TI? Well, some jury starts another little process. It’s kind of a mini-trial, but one conducted without a judge, a prosecutor, or a defense attorney. And, it is that mini-trial that determines the guilt or innocence of the accused.
We know, from our calculations of inner octaves, that there is an octave between every note, so let’s explore the octave between LA and TI.
We will start with the octave of organic life.
It started with DNA (DO).
After that came the Plants (RE): an instinctive life form, which responds to sunlight, needs water, but cannot move.
Then, organic life made it to (MI) and produced one-brained beings, Worms, etc.
It continued to (FA) and developed an emotional aspect, like Birds who raise their young.
Next is (SO), animals with an intellectual aspect, I used the label Dog to represent this aspect.
Finally organic life reached (LA), which are the social animals, like Apes, who take care of each other.
So, we have the octave of Organic Life, via the force from the bottom DO, being shoved all the way up to LA. But that is as far as it can be shoved. Which means, between LA and TI there is a small scale octave, which must carry the process to TI. What is that octave? Well, what evolved in this world? … Man showed up. Out of the ape kingdom came man. So man must be the octave between LA and TI. I call it the Octave of Reason.
But the octave of man, like every octave, starts at a very low level… and must acquire all the aspects of RE to LA if he wishes to ascend.
So, let’s look at the evolution of man, which takes place in the LA-TI interval of the octave of organic life, and envision his journey.
At first, he becomes perceptive. His instinctive center adjusts to the world around himself, which it must do for him to survive.
Then, he develops dexterity and starts making tools.
Next, comes compassion… a devotion to his family.
Followed by discernment, the proper intellectual judging of his environment.
And finally, he reaches conscience.
Which means, there are many aspects of man’s development that have to take place before he can become self-conscious. He does not just pop out a self-conscious man. He pops out as an evolving man, and it probably took some time before he was able to say, “I exist”… and became conscious of himself. That means that the octave of his “man-ness” has, by some force, from the bottom, reached the moment of La in its own octave and says, “I am.” And, a sense of self emerges.
Question: So, in the octave of Reason, the intervals between DO to LA are asleep?
Yes. There is no self-consciousness yet. There is just, I sense, I smell, I see, I make a tool, I feel, I know what that is, and I raise my children. Again, it is a long evolutionary process. We have to look back at evolution and see that the first man didn’t pop out and go, “Oh! I exist! I am! Wow! I’m separate! I’m an individual!” At first, all they did was orient by sensation, label things, and start a language. “UUgawaaa!” And everyone would go, “UUgawaaa!” That was this beginning. There was no self-consciousness yet.
We look at the ape kingdom, we look at the dog kingdom, we look at the dolphin kingdom, and we see in them some social development, but we do not put them in the category of being self-conscious. So, it must have happened that way for us too. Life shoved organic life up to LA said, “I can’t shove it any further.” Then came the inner octave of LA-TI. The octave of man. After which, it itself had to be shoved up to its LA-TI, where it recognized its own existence. But, that’s as far as it could shove.
Now, what do we do? Ah ha, another little octave happens in that octave’s LA-TI, which I call that the octave of the Self-Conscious Man. And, likewise, it begins shoving things up from the bottom… through levels of acuity, poise, empathy, perspicacity, and wisdom. But, when it reaches the note LA of its octave, it says, “That’s all I can do."
Then, another little inner octave comes into existence in its LA-TI, the octave of Master, i.e., the octave of Objective Conscious Man, who also must pass through instinctive, moving, emotional, intellectual, and social aspects, as its note RE, MI, FA, SO, and LA are reached, which I labeled Acumen, Humility, Impartiality, Intuition, and finally Real I.So, I see it as a series of inner octaves, all obeying the push of Life. And, as they get smaller and smaller, they get closer and closer to the original TI, until the tip of the Palm tree starts to appear, and pulls the octave to completion.
Question: Is it the LA-TI of the octave of Objective Conscious Man, where we can see the “picture on the box?”
Yes.
Question: So, the octave of Master does start until you reach the LA in the octave of Self-Conscious Man?
That is correct. You don’t just pop out and say, “Okay, I’m self-conscious, so, therefore, I have a Master… I’m done.” When you become Self-Conscious you start off with Acuity. That is Purgatory. Then you start to develop Poise, like in the model from the TV series Joan Of Arcadia, where God tells Joan, “Humility isn’t Humility until you are good enough at something to be humble.” You don’t just start there. You have to get so good at it that you finally say, “It isn’t about me, I don’t need praise, and I’m not after the glory." At that moment, you can be humble.
Question: Where does “Real I” begin? Is it in what we call Steward and Christians call the Christ Consciousness?
Well, points of definition probably always get us in trouble. “Real I” is a process. It is a developmental process. It starts at the moment we become self-conscious. “I exist.” Is that real I? No, but it is the emergence of it. It starts way down there and goes through various stages of development. On the chart, real I isn’t labeled "Real I" until you reach the top. Just like in Ouspensky’s model of man #7, where he says that only Man #7 has real I. I know we have great octave knowledge and talk about DO, RE, MI, FA, SO, LA, TI. But, nothing takes place at the notes. It all takes place in the intervals. Notes are just there to say, “Something’s changed. We’re not doing what we were doing, we’re now doing something different.” So, we use the moments of “note-ness” to designate that something changed. “I’m a teenager!” Which means I’ve had my thirteenth birthday, but that is not my teenager-ness. Teenager-ness is the interval between thirteen and twenty. To where I can finally say another change takes place…”I am an adult!” We go from a pupa to a chrysalis to a… which label the moments of change, but things are not the moments, they are in the spaces in between the moments. The notes are just there to designate that something has become different… something has changed.
Question: I use the label “Real I” as a collection of I’s that have one central aim.
Again, because there are gradations, we have something that sees something… but is that Real I? Well, I guess Real I could be there all the time but it isn’t there all the time. We just have moments of perspicacity. We have a moment of clarity on one thing, but five minutes later we are identified; five minutes after that, our voice is being raised; five minutes after that, we are mad at our neighbor; five minutes after that, we are holding accounts against him. Okay, well, wait a minute, that can’t be called Real I. Real I ought to permeate the whole machine, but it doesn’t; instead, it emerges. Everything comes in little glimpses, comes in little moments, and the accumulation of those moments starts to build something. Greater and greater development occurs; until, finally, it is in our posture to be humble.
So, we may have emerging moments of Real I and the freedoms that come with it. That is, we may have glory for a moment… but, the next moment there are different I’s in the carriage. Thus, we cannot claim Real I… just emerging moments of it.
Question: Was it the sinking of Atlantis that made the Formatory Apparatus the ruler of everything?
Yes. The sinking of Atlantis left the Formatory Apparatus as our highest part. That is, when we lost our Higher Emotional Center, the highest guy was the mechanical part of the mechanical part of the intellectual center, so it ruled.
It would be easy if we were one… but, instead, we are many. We have clarity in one part and are identified in another.
