I use graph paper, but regular printer paper will work. Measure and cut a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch wide strip of paper exactly 9 inches long. Mark it in even thirds (draw a line across the width every 3 inches).
Measure and cut another strip of paper 9 inches long (it does not to be a certain width… say 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch, etc. wide). It will have the last inch on each end folded up so it forms a U shaped trough that is 7 inches long. Mark the trough from the left at 2 5/8 inches and at 5 1/4 inches.
I have graph paper with 1/8 inch squares, which means a 72 square strip is approximately 9 inches long, and a 56 square trough is approximately 7 inches long (a second 72 square strip with 8 squares folded up on each end makes a trough that is exactly 56 squares. The strip/trough length needs to be in the ratio 9 to 7… 72/56.
If you are able to use the 72 squares graph paper method, mark the thirds on the 72 squares strip at 24 squares and 48 squares. Mark the 56 squares trough from the left at 21 squares and at 42 squares. Try to keep the 9 inch or 72 squares strip flat and straight and avoid bending it until the next step.
You then fold down the right side of the trough (flat), so you can lay the 9 inch strip on top of the trough with the left side of the strip abutted against the left folded up side of the trough. Then you place your index finger of your left hand outside the left folded up side of the trough, so the trough doesn’t move, when you push the right side of the 9 inch strip into the trough (use your finger nail to push the strip end) and stop pushing at the moment it enters the trough, wherein you can fold up the right side (that you folded down flat)… thus trapping and holding the 9 inch strip in the 7 inch trough.
As you push, the 9 inch strip will be forced up into a bow.
Watch it… and after a day or so, the bow shaped 9 inch strip, will shift to the right (towards the side you pushed on, since that side was stressed more when it took the bow shape). Miraculously, the marks on the 9 inch strip will be exactly above the marks placed on the trough. When that happens you will have the shape created by the Cosmic Rumple. The thirds of the strip are now the diatonic of the trough.
