The April Fools Exercise Part 1 – The Preliminary Explanation

Are you ready to awaken?

I bet you are.

You have done a splendid job studying and learning the plethora of truths contained in Gurdjieff: Cosmic Secrets. You finished all the homework, journaled all the exercises, and got A-1 results from the Threefold Attention Exercise.

Let’s begin.

More than just an exercise

I am going to thoroughly explain the April Fool’s exercise to you in detail, so that you will know exactly what we are going to be doing and why. You will understand how it works, grasp why it is virtually infallible, and comprehend that it cannot be anything but successful.

The April Fools Exercise is more than just an exercise. It has four Parts. This part, the first part, is The Preliminary Explanation. The second part is the Premise, in which I will explain the crux of the exercise. The third Part is the Secret and the Great Truth. With its knowledge, you will be able to perform the Fourth part, The April Fools exercise, with great force.

But, before I explain the Premise, tell you the Secret and the Great Truth, and lead you through The April Fools Exercise, which will wake you up, let’s do a quick review of some of the things that you have learned that are pertinent to the process.

All right, let’s begin.

We only understand what makes sense

For anything in life to work, it must be understood. And, it can only be understood, it it makes sense. Gurdjieff: Cosmic Secrets made sense. The mathematics made sense. Russell’s stories made sense. Unification made sense. Everything we discussed made sense.

Man has seven centers, an instinctive center, a moving center, an emotional center, an intellectual center, a higher emotional center, and a higher mental center; and, there are seven stages of life: instinctive plants, and moving, emotional, intellectual, higher emotional, and higher mental animals. Which too made sense.

To awaken his higher emotional center, man must unify his lower centers. That is, his instinctive, moving, and emotional centers, which, when functioning together, act like cells that have become tissues; and, when that happens, the cells gain higher properties. As it is with mans’ lower centers, which too gain higher properties when they become unified. For a man, the higher properties are self-remembering, conscience, and self-consciousness. Which also, clearly, made sense.

Life begins with DNA

Life began with DNA (DNRe), a molecule that could copy itself. It could remember what it discovered. DNA was the first moment of self-remembering in the Universe. And as such, the evolution of life began. Since that moment, everything has been trying to make copies of itself, trying to remember itself, trying to duplicate, just like DNA. Instinctive plants duplicated… then movement began, and creepy crawling creatures appeared that too sought to copy themselves. Thereafter, animals started to feel and take care of their young, which further enhanced the duplicating principle. Next, intelligent animals found the same place to mate year after year. Followed by pack animals and herd animals, who worked together to survive, creating societal organizations that covered the Earth, again, all serving the duplicating principle, all trying to remember themselves. This too made sense.

Once the animals had fully developed their centers, spillage occurred, and man appeared. When he did, he possessed a new property; the property of reason. Reason gave man superiority over the animals. Which also made sense.

The rise of reason

When I told you the story of the curved rock and how reason might have begun, that too made sense.

We could also see how the man who lived in the cave, needed to use all of his centers in order to survive; because, he lived in a dangerous world. But, unfortunately, his reason came from spillage and was not something that he personally acquired. That is, he did not understand what reason was, since it was not self-attained. Thus, once it appeared, he did not know what to do with it, except, to use its properties to fashion a weapon, destroy the dangerous animals, and to build a fence. He used his reason to make the world a safer place for his children… which made sense to him. Unfortunately, he did not realize that what he was actually doing was destroying the possibility for his children to self-attain reason, which certainly made sense to us.

False Reason becomes dominant

Man’s fraudulent reason quickly became dominant. He no longer had to run faster than danger, he had a spear, he had a crossbow, he had a .357 Magnum. His non-self-attained reason made him superior. He no longer needed to use his lower centers. And, because of that, he lost the function of his Higher Emotional Center, which was dependent upon the unification of his lower centers. Thus, he became un-enlightened, lost his conscience, his self-consciousness… and, Atlantis sank. Unfortunately, that too made sense.

All man then needed was mechanical reason. The ability to go A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and when he did, they reward his mechanical reason with a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and a Doctorate. Unfortunately, the Mechanical Part of the Mechanical Part of his Higher Mental Center endowed the Mechanical Part of his Intellectual Center with automatic reason, simple comparison. Man’s mechanical reason was now superior to his other centers, even superior to the higher parts of those centers… which also made perfect sense.

We saw how, in ancient times, early men did amazing things. There were a lot of smart people back then. Close societies, whose children grew up and became responsible contributing members. Then something happened. It stopped being that way. It stopped making sense.

Fakir, Monks, and Yogis

Even Fakirs, Monks, and Yogis could not reclaim what was lost; once the light of conscience went out, even they could not re-enlighten it. That is, they did not know how to get their centers from being in the lower stories to being in the upper story, i.e., to have their lower centers occupy a higher place. Their centers remained separated, driven by the mechanical part of the intellectual center. Man no longer needed to utilize the higher parts of his lower centers, because the mechanical part of the intellectual center made them moot. Thus, he no longer needed to develop heightened sensations, movements, or feelings

Someone, following the way of the fakir, monk, or yogi, may get something every twenty years or so, which kept the idea alive that their way was a legitimate way. But since only a few ever attained enlightenment, they had to perpetrate the idea that awakening was very hard. But, that is not true. If someone said to an orange tree that making oranges was hard, and that only one tree every twenty years or so might make an orange, that would sound silly to us, as it would make no sense.

Even Jesus said, mans’ awakening was something that should quickly come to pass. That does not sound like a twenty-year journey to me.

All men, when they reach responsible age, should awaken. But, after man destroyed his lower centers, he had to invent the “only-one-can-do-it-every-twenty-years-or-so” excuse.

Purge the wrong data

Gurdjieff repeatedly wrote about this. He explained that Purgatory was a place where higher beings went to purge the wrong data which they had received, so that they too might become enlightened.

Russell saw the journey. He saw how nature shoved life up to reason and how reason destroyed the centers which supported it.  And, he saw how man fell back into his Formatory Apparatus and only used the mechanical parts of his centers.

I repeat: Man only uses the mechanical parts of his centers. He is an automaton. A machine, with no unified attention.

Scientists studied the attention spans of babies, children, and people. When they did, they found that most people had a very short attention span, and were unable hold attention for very long, except for mechanical, automatic attention.

In Chapter 3 we discussed how the first men acquired reason. And, at the end of the book, in A Law Conformable Schematic for Awakening Higher Centers, we saw how they lost it. When that happened, there were not enough unified parts to support man’s conscience and self-consciousness. Thus, the functioning of their Higher Emotional Centers ceased, and men fell asleep. And, they have been trying to awaken ever since. Trying to claw their way back up. Following every measure of religion and philosophy. They have tried everything. They even ate Gurdjieff salad, and became vegetarians. Gosh, how many times have people swapped religions… trying to find one that might get them back to something real; but, to no avail.

The quest to find an objective way

Fortunately, Russell Smith got lucky; he woke up. He had a series of events happen in his life that woke him up. And, as a result, he read certain books, did certain exercises, memorized certain material, and studied certain images and models. However, when his students read the same books, did the same exercises, memorized the same passages, and studied the same images and models, they did not wake up.

Russell sincerely tried to find out why.

Then one day, he put that question to his higher center. A center that he had learned to communicate with, and asked, “Why do people not awake? Why do they not have what I have, inner silence, freedom, clarity, reason, impartiality, no hatred, no anger, and no disappointment?”

He wanted to know why they were not awake. After all, they were honorable folks, they were good people, they were sincere, they tried hard, they read, they did the exercises. They did all the things that Russell did; why were they not awake?

All ways are subjective ways

That is when the higher said, “You awoke subjectively. Everyone who wakes up, wakes up subjectively; and, you cannot share a subjective way.”

When a man awakes subjectively, that is, if certain things happen at the right time and in the right sequence, he may awaken, but others, who do the same things, will not. Like the guy who accidentally kicked the root and woke up. After which, a school was formed, composed of people who also tried to kick a root and wake up. People, desperately trying to reproduce the same outcome, but could not. However, every twenty-years-or-so somebody does. They happen to kick the root just right; and, thus, keep that subjective way alive.

Russell saw the tragedy. He saw that even a real school, which may have been created by someone who actually awoke, was unable to show others how to awaken, since its teacher awoke subjectively. He watched them all fail and saw how all schools died when their teacher died, which concerned him greatly. Russell does not know why he responded the way he did. Perhaps, he felt frustration. Became overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness. Or was just experiencing the tragedy of it all. But something in him looked back at the higher; and, in a rather angry tone, yelled, “Then give me an objective way!”

The importance of understanding the simple rules and laws

The higher responded, “Since you already know the rules and laws, that is, have deciphered the structure, and understand how the system works, I will give you a simple exercise that will show everyone how to awaken.” Then, the higher told Russell, “If a man understands the rules and laws, it should be easy to show him how to awaken,” and it then gave Russell an objective exercise to that end. It said here, “Give this exercise to all who understand the rules and laws and they will awaken.” That is, after they understand the law-conformability of the rules and laws, the exercise will unify their lower centers, reactivate their Higher Emotional Center, and they will become enlightened.

It was almost like saying, if someone knew the simple rules and laws of how to add and subtract, multiply, and divide, they would be able to do higher math. All they needed to learn was how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. If they did they would be able to do trigonometry, algebra, and calculus, because higher math is just the extension lower math, of simple rules and laws.

There are simple rules and laws behind awakening as well. You have already discovered them. Remember all the charts and diagrams which explained everything; explained how things worked, and revealed a structure behind the Universe? A structure that explained the Enneagram, the lines of supervision, how things externally work, how things internally work, centers, parts, atoms, quarks, RNA, DNA, higher centers, and what unification brings. God, we had a plethora of things that were all created by some simple rules and laws. We will now use the certainty of those simple rules and laws, which is the structure behind everything, to perform a simple but objective exercise to recreate ourselves… and, awaken.

Are you ready?
