New Instagram post – Gurdjieff Aphorism #37

Man is given a definite number of experiences—economizing them, he prolongs his life.

This aphorism relates to how we register moments. When asleep, centers acting mechanically, we remember nothing, and looking back, our lives seem short. We remember moments of consciousness, with all centers registering impressions. Not only do we take in more in the moment but recall more. Thus, our real washing lives appear to be longer and more full.

  1. The word “washing” in the last sentence may be a misspelling of the intended word.

The explanations with the aphorisms are really great and provide even more ideas to reflect on.

  2. Gary, the correction to “waking” in 1 of the 2 statements is helpful.
